Skyscraper Cemetery
This project was inspired by the idea of skyscraper cemeteries. Vertical cemeteries are a relatively new and interesting practice. They are growing in popularity in dense urban areas where land is scarce. Hamilton County does not have those same space constraints.
What is the primary land use type that land?
How much of land is being using for cemeteries in Hamilton County?
According to data available from the National Land Cover Database (NLCD), 56% of the land used for cemeteries in Hamilton County is categorized as Developed, Open Space.
Could they have a wider variety of land uses? Could they be multifunctional?
What does it mean to be multifunctional? Cemeteries can be multifunctional through 5 dimensions that they could hold.

What strategies could be used to make cemeteries multifunctional?
Our team created a matrix of different types of cemeteries and the scale of the strategy to explore what type of additional function could be appropriate in each type of cemetery. To see the whole matrix and learn more about each strategy, click here.
Where in Hamilton County could we implement one or more of these strategies?
Two test sites were chosen in Hamilton County. How can these two cemeteries be brought out of the past and into their future?
Check out the two test sites below.
