Westwood Baptist Cemetery
An active layout for
An active layout works well at Westwood Baptist Cemetery because of its location within Cheviot's business district. Below are two potential layouts that could be created with the leadership of local volunteers.
An Active Layout

This layout's most unique feature is a community event space. This would be a great location for low profile events like movie screenings in the summer. No permanent structures would need to be built. An inflatable movie screen can be used, and community members can sit on blankets on the ground.

Or a Passive Layout!
A passive layout could work well here too if was what the community wanted. This layout's most unique feature is an apiary, or bee yard. With the added pollinator garden along the border of the cemetery and the cradle graves, bees would have an abundance of food available to them. The honey could be collected and sold in the community to generate funds to help cover the costs of upkeep for the cemetery.
The Neighborhood Scale
Westwood Baptist Cemetery at
The central location of the site along with its proximity to other greenspaces, cemeteries, and the existing trail network makes this a great location for an expansion of the existing trail network. Below are suggested routes that could connect Westwood Baptist Cemetery to existing amenities within a 1-mile radius.

This project enhances the use of four of the five dimensions on this site: Public Space, Biodiversity and Green Infrastructure, Social and Spiritual, and Smart Technology. Community space is created with a designated walking path, children's garden, and a movie screening area. Biodiversity is added by creating the pollinator gardens and cradle graves. Making the cemetery more inviting, will increase people's willingness to come and have a private moment during the day. QR codes can be added to the graves of notable pioneers or veterans to learn more about these people and the impact that they had.
List of functions
There are many different functions that this site can hold. Below is a list of a few that we are proposing.
Active Park
Walking Path
Community Space
Eco-Friendly Space
Transition Space from mowed lawn to Pollinator Habitat
Connection between existing trail network and other greenspaces and cemeteries
If you, or anyone else, would like to take these ideas and turn them into a real project in your local cemetery, remember to reach out to the other community members and local community groups. The best and most successful projects are born out of community engagement and working together. Most importantly, remember to always respect the cemetery, the people interred there, and the space's primary purpose.
